Sometimes Dr. Roberts will discover a cancerous growth on
your skin that cannot be completely treated by medical therapy
alone. In these situations, she will review which surgical
option she thinks is best for you. She will also explain the
post-operative course and what you can expect during the healing
phase.
Occasionally, if the growth is very large or in a cosmetically
sensitive area on the head or neck, she may recommend a procedure
called Mohs surgery. With this type of surgery,
specially trained Mohs surgeons remove the cancerous growth
while trying to spare as much surrounding normal tissue as
they can. Dr. Roberts will refer you to a board certified
Mohs surgeon in your area if needed.
After your procedure, Dr. Roberts will continue to monitor
you closely with frequent screening exams to be sure there
is no recurrence of your skin cancer and to detect any future
growths early. She may even recommend a skin care program
to prevent future precancerous and cancerous growths if you
are interested.
Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound
of cure!
Avoiding excessive sun exposure, wearing sun protective clothing
and eye wear as well as the use of broad spectrum sunscreen
daily is recommended for all our patients.
